The San Antonio River Basin encompasses 4,180 square miles from the headwaters of the Medina River to the point at which the San Antonio River joins with the Guadalupe River before emptying into the Gulf of Mexico. The San Antonio River begins just below Olmos Dam and runs 252 river miles through four counties: Bexar, Wilson, Karnes, and Goliad Counties. San Antonio is the most densely populated area of the basin, containing residential, commercial, industrial, and agricultural development. This area of the basin is often referred to as "flash flood alley" largely due to the dramatic differences in elevation from the Edwards Plateau area of northern Bexar County to the South Texas Brush County in southern Bexar County. The uniqueness of each watershed coupled with the rapid development that is occurring poses challenges for local officials to mitigate the effects of urbanization on water quality and quantity. The key to a good flood control plan is control and maintenance of riverbeds, canals, etc. It is easy to forget the errors and lessons from past disasters.
